I think we resolved the issue today (by “we”, I mean working directly with the WooCommerce Support team). It seems that I needed to login with a user other than “admin” on my site. Once I was logged in as a different user, that enabled a dialog at the top of the WooCommerce, Settings, Tax tab that wanted me to connect it to the WordPress.com site. Once that connection was complete, the pieces all fell into place very quickly. I don’t think they changed anything behind the curtain. I think the only connection (at least that I can discern) is my user id matches between my login to WordPress.com and the administrative user on my WordPress site. I’m still finalizing testing – but early testing is looking very good. I’ll mark this as complete and open a new issue if something else comes up.
Oops – I forgot to include the status tab. It still doesn’t show the Shipping & Tax tab. I got here by clicking (1) WooCommerce (2) Status (3) well, I tried really hard to find the Shipping & Tax tab.
Shipping & Tax has been updated. No improvement in the situation.
Just to confirm, I clicked on (1) WooCommerce (2) settings (3) Tax and the option for automated taxes is still missing.
Sure – I’ll try to remain patient. At least we’ve confirmed your screens shots still don’t match what I’m seeing. To install the plugins, I (1) clicked on Plugins (2) Add plug-in (3) type in the name (4) click on “install” on the selected plug-in (see image below). This approach still doesn’t allow “automatic tax calculations” as previously noted. Please notice it now wants to update. I’ll do that after I finish posting the rest of the steps I followed.
The “Store” option was a later attempt to get it from the WooCommerce.com site. I was getting desperate for a better / different install. So I followed the “Details” link to get to WooCommerce.com and searched for Tax. I “purchased” the plug-in for $0.00 three different times hoping to complete a cleaner installation that would actually work. You can see the image below for the “store”.
Yes – that’s the “tax” plugin. However, it keeps appearing as “Shipping & Tax” on my list of plugins. Every single install (from either the plugin search or the “store”) provides the same outcome.
I’ll provide an update shortly after attempting to update the Shipping & Tax plugin (just in case something improves).
Regarding logs – we have zero messages. The only critical error message was when Bluehost crashed the site (while trying to create the staging environment). There are not other events logged. I wish we could find a way to enable verbose logging in an attempt to track the logic down.
Sure – I’ll post it here again (just for the record – for the 3rd time on this thread). Can somebody either (1) respond based on the prior logs they’ve requested or (2) actually look at the prior portions of the thread? I keep providing the same things with minimal insights but requests for the same things. Sorry – I know I’m being harsh – but this isn’t moving forward and the requests are repeating.
@jonayedhosen – Thank you for your reply. Please see my note and image above (posted 1.5 days ago) showing I don’t have a “Shipping & Tax” tab. We’ve installed Shipping & Tax (approximately 3 times now (after deactivating and removing it)), but we only get a “Shipping” and a separate “Tax” tab (as noted in that image).
I also appreciate your insight on the need to be in the US, Europe or Canada. Please see my note and image above (posted 1.5 days ago) showing I have it configured in US, Ohio. I have the nexus set accordingly. If you review that post, you’ll also see I have tax calculations enabled (Settings -> General tab) and I also point out that I’m not getting an option to enable “Automated taxes” on either the “Tax” tab (or the mysterious “Shipping & Tax” tab we don’t have available).
I’m going to go really far out on a limb here: is it possible the “Shipping & Tax” plugin is not installing what the team thinks it’s installing? I keep getting directions to set fields that are missing on tabs that are missing. This is a brand new install based on what I think are the latest builds. I’ll save you looking above in the thread… the versions are:
- WC Version: 9.6.2

- Jetpack: by Automattic – 14.3 (even though a lot of posts say this is no longer required)

Also note that others have requested that we enable detailed logging – but that’s on the “Shipping & Tax” tab that is not being created by the plugin install.
We’re absolutely open to other ideas and look forward to more testing to help find the source of the defect.

As I look at an order (which hasn’t been paid yet since it is just a test order), I don’t see an option to print the label. I forced the test order to complete, and I still don’t have an option to print the label. However, at the bottom of the page, it’s encouraging me to install WooCommerce Shipping (which I thought was part of Shipping & Tax?).
Thanks for the response. I’m in the US (Ohio) – so we should be good for support of automated tax calculations. We don’t have any fatal errors in the logs. Not even a single message pertaining to the tax issue. The results are simply missing in the cart and at checkout. I’ve only been able to validate the core logic works by using a single, standard tax. All items have a tax amount calculated then, but we really need the auto tax calculations to work to handle economic nexus. Here’s an image of the tax options available. Please note: there isn’t a tab for “Shipping & Tax”. On tax, there isn’t an option for “automated taxes”.

It keeps installing Shipping & Tax (which never seems to include the “automated taxes” option.

Here are the tax settings available. Per the documentation, “Enable automated taxes” should be available.
