Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: no localhostYes,MAMP. I set everything up and had worpress up and looking at the new site. I closed it and can’t find any way to open it again. I did have it open but don’t know how when the email came in with your post and I clicked on the url to get to the forum.
On doing that iOS closed all the pages I had open in Safari and opened a page on the forum so now I’m trying to figure out how to get back to my wordpress site.
I did see somewhere that the port number had been changed.
So now I find it with http://localhost:8888
That problem is solved so now to find out why Safari keeps disappearing
Thanks for replying by the way.

In reply to: Last step of installation on macWell, any way I went back and tried again. The key to completing the install is when a page of text pops up with a link for help, take it. You will get the form to fill out and complete the install of WordPress and everything then works.

In reply to: Last step of installation on macI’ve done the same thing and I’m lost here as the instruction is either wrong or left out steps. I don’t know up nothing works.
I to got to the database to fill out the form. No form, so I put the info in wp-config but did nothing for me. Can’t make any kind of connection to the localhost. I used the names and directories in the instruction.
The end result is nothing absolutely nothing. It sure would be nice if these ‘super techs’ would leave a link to contact them when they leave us hanging like this.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Moving website to new hostThanks for the answer. I finally figured it out last night and got the site up. Good info you referenced, wish I had seen it before. It would have saved a lot of time figuring it out from scratch.
I still don’t know how to find out what version of WordPress I’m using. I don’t know much about WordPress as somebody else created this site but I have to maintain it so trying to learn.

In reply to: Can't open install.phpThe files are in /jcap but WordPress is not installed. I have since deleted the whole thing.
I tried again to install to a specified directory on Dotster using their install and WordPress runs but there is no files any where in any directory so what good is that?
With the instructions available, I don’t see how anybody but a trained WordPress user could get it up and running. The funny thing is that once it is running it looks easy to use but who could get it running in the right place? I’ve been using Microsoft Expression Web 3 and was thinking WordPress would be easier to use but my gosh what a defragmented inviornment and such a pain to setup. I’m not saying I’m giving up but I’m away from home on a slow connection and I will give up untill I get home anyway. I’ve literally spent days trying to get WordPress set up enough just to run.

In reply to: Can't open install.phpI have uploaded WordPress to the website and tried to run install.php but it leaves me with a blank screen or file not found. The file is there and it is in the correct directory and I specify the correct directory and it does nothing. I’m on Dotster hosting with apache.
Followed the instructions right down the line with no problems until I tried to load install.php in a browser. iexplorer, firefox, chrome nonw worked. I can see all the files in their proper directory with file manager on Dotster host site. my url is jcapps.net, WordPress is in /jcap directory. If I go to http://www.jcapps.net/index.html it loads.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Directories mixed up and can't accessjcapps.net is hosted by Dotster Hosting. Neither the wordpress or the website is being hosted by dotster.
What a mess! Please tell me how to get rid of wordpress and the website. Nothing can be done through Dotster as it shows no site or wordpress exists.
I used the script on Dotster to install wordpress and there were no choices of any kind.

In reply to: Directories mixed up and can't accessWordPress is in the correct directory but it put my website in the same directory. I want my website in the root directory. I could probably just move the files but I can’t access the directory. In fact the wordpress directory doesn’t even exist according to my host, Dotster.
