For information in case someone else has the same issue: the fix was replacing intval with floatval in several php files. Note that the cause of a similar symptom might be different.

The questions in the form were my guide to finding the issue by myself: I has wrongly configured the sandbox IDs.
I have now a working plugin (at least in Sandbox mode) and it all seems fine.
