Thanks for your response, it was interesting to hear your opinion. I work in higher ed and there has been a ton of buzz lately regarding badges and specifically Open Badges, so I guess it doesn’t seem nearly as niche to me, just in the growing stages, but maybe that’s just how it appears from my vantage point. I do know a new plugin, BadgeOS, was recently released that does just this, but the Achievements plugin has been around a lot longer and seems to be way more powerful, so I thought this may be something you may be considering as well.
