Not sure why, but after deactivating/deleting/reinstalling all was well again.This was a brand new install with no other plugins but Akismet installed or running. I will keep an eye on it for a day or two and see what happens 😉

My issue seems to have been related to something on the server … the CURL packages were not able to get a valid SSL connection to ww.wp.xz.cn
Just got off with my hosting provider – they are moving me to another server that is not having curl issues w/ssl … fingers crossed 🙂
Ok, I am pretty sure it had something to do with the one-click upgrade of WP – I just manually reinstalled WP and it seems to be working now.
I will leave this open/unresolved for a little while and make sure its all good to go then resolve if working
