In case this reflects your situation, I thought I’d leave this note here.
My Really Simple Captcha disappeared from my WordPress contact7 forms in the past few days.
Where the captcha would appear, instead I had text and a link saying I needed to install the plug-in.
When I tried to reinstall the plug-in, I got an error saying that the directory for the plugin already existed.
I solved it by FTPing into my site, deleting the plugin directory and then installing and activating R.S.C.
And it was back!

I did manage to finally get it working. it was a lot of trial and error though this looks so simple!
