Wow, thank you!! You made the fix so easy. I was able to add the css code into Additional CSS, and the subscribe feature is gone! Thanks again.

Tara, thanks for all the suggestions listed. I tried all of them with the exception of resetting the plugin folder since it seemed beyond my capabilities. I ruled out a problem with the theme itself since the same problem was showing when I switched to a default theme.
I am totally embarrassed to admit that the problem was that I hadn’t updated a content box called ‘excerpt’. I assumed the site was just pulling the first hundred characters as a preview on its own. Since I’d just been modifying the theme sample posts, the excerpt section remained untouched.
For anyone else that runs into this: the top right of my WordPress screen has an options box called ‘screen options’. After checking the ‘excerpt’ box, a place to write the excerpt shows under the content box. There you can add a summary of the article written.
Ugh, so much to learn.
