Ok thanks. It looks like my CSS for links was overriding the readlink settings. I have rearranged things now to my satisfaction. Thanks you.

I solved the problem by using the simple and effective Duplicate plugin. Solved it meaning I got the result although I did not get to understand what was wrong the first time. Still it is mainly the result that matters.

Thanks Mohammad. Well I have read and followed that article and it I am still no further forward. I do think the issue is something to do with the fact that I am using a subdomain of an alias, since if I copy the site to another host I can get it working fine there, but not on the subdomain.
