I spoke too fast.
Apparently the .pot file does not contain the texts I wanted to translate: call to action (view gallery) of gallery labels.
In my case the translations were in the Essential Grid part of my theme.

It works!
I was thinking that defining the images in the variations would do this.
Assigning them from the product gallery is more logical: otherwise they cannot appear under the main product image.
The code can also be placed in the functions.php file.
Thanks for this solution anyway, it took me a while to find it.
