Note: Changing the aspect ratio in the product settings in woocommerce is also helpful.

Issue resolved. I went to the product gallery page, selected edit product, and under Astra Settings changed the sidebar setting to Right Sidebar. Now main image and thumbnails are displayed on the visible screen so no scrolling is needed.
