Deleting lines 152 to 205 in showcase.php lets the recent posts disappear, but the header shifts to the right for about 5px. So this is no option if you want your site to look good.
Same applies to `.widget-area {display: none;}. The header will shift as well. WTF!
I can’t find <?php get_sidebar(); ?> in my twenty eleven template files. Why do u remove the code to show the sidebar?
When I hide the sidebar with #secondary {display: none;} for the showcase template on my HOME, the whole page class slips 5px to the right. No idea, where to debug.

Seems like 2011 and theme extensions do the opposite of one another. Is there a way to hide sidebars on special pages and templates?
