I have similar problem with 2.0 beta, but downgrading back to 1.9.13 works fine for me. You shouldn’t worry about overwriting the stylesheet if you have placed it in your theme folder (wp-content/themes/your-theme/nggallery.css).
What version of NextGEN Gallery are you using?
