All sounds very promising, Jonathan — thanks! I know it’s a major lift to replicate Drupal Views 3 — heck, it’s been around for quite some time!
As for the grouping in views, here’s a link to a video on the feature (third-party video, no endorsement or affiliation) — it’s quite cool how it can nest a group inside a group, inside a group, etc.:
