The original thumb is defined as “custom-170” and in imageFX I’ve set a greyscale filter with a slug of “custom-170-bw”.
Still no luck!
I would recommend looking at the jQuery Lazy Load plugin.

The thumbnails only load once they are in view. This way you aren’t loading 400 in one go.
