In reply to: Upgrading from 1.5 to 3.0Thank you, James, for the clarification. I am a bit nervous about doing this but I know that it will probably be for the best.
Are the instructions correct that I need to back up my database and files after each incremental upgrade (not just before starting the process?)
Your help is much appreciated.

In reply to: Upgrading from 1.5 to 3.0I need to upgrade from 1.52 to 3.0 also. I am not having any problems with my blog but I want to prevent future issues. When I go to the download link(s) mentioned above in steps 2 and 5, for example, there is no version 1.7 and 1.9 to download in order to do those incremental upgrades. Does that mean I just go directly from 1.5.2 —-> 2.1, then do 2.3, then 2.5, then 2.7?
I don’t want to make an error doing this significant upgrade. Advice is appreciated.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamThank you all for your help – for the moment all bad bot action has stopped. That bot trap seems to have done the trick, and I’m still receiving comments from friends so allowed comments are getting through.
Thank you, thank you!

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamCharle97,
Thanks I read the bottrap article on kloth you suggested. My site is still being hit constantly although the comment spam has stopped.
I am working on a backup copy of my .htaccess (and I have one “clean” in case I need to revert to it.
I am unclear where to insert that paragraph suggested in Method 2 in the article.
My .htaccess file starts with
#BEGIN WordPress
<ifModlule mod_rewrite.c>Then there’s a long list of commands that begin with Rewrite or Rewrite Rule
Finally it ends with
</IfModule>#END WordPress
=========
Where do I put the following block … which I will customize with IPs for the bad bots that are hitting my site?SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent “Indy Library” bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent “Internet Explore 5.x” bad_bot
SetEnvIf Remote_Addr “195\.154\.174\.[0-9]+” bad_bot
SetEnvIf Remote_Addr “211\.101\.[45]\.[0-9]+” bad_bot
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
Deny from env=bad_botI’m sorry, I don’t have programming experience so this is new to me. But I can cut, paste and customize if I know what and where to insert it.
Thank you very much for your help.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamThank you for these suggestions Charle and Samboll
I’ll let the plugins run and if I don’t see a drop in hits, I’ll try these methods.
Do I need to designate anything with wildcards such as …deny from 196.40.*.*
to exclude everything from that range or would just writing
deny from 196.40 take care of it as your example above?
I’ve seen it written both ways. Almost all my bots are coming from two IP ranges.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamI’ve got bad behavior, akismet and spamkarma2 installed and I’m still getting about a hit a minute – I’d love to be able to turn these bots away to decrease my bandwidth usage and get realistic stats on # of non-spam visitors.
I appreciate the guidance in getting those installed.
I’ll ask my original question again in the hope that maybe there’s an answer out there. Where do I paste the block included between <Limit GET> and </Limit> when I edit the .htaccess file. I know the bad bot IPs, I just want to be invisible to them so they won’t keep sucking my bandwidth.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamCharle97, thanks I’ll look into that.
I just checked my SpamKarma plugin logs and noticed that I’m still getting about 1 spam a minute. They aren’t getting through to my built-in WP moderation panel, but I’m guessing that means that Bad Behavior isn’t working – because they are still hitting my site.
I’m not even sure where to check to see if Bad Behavior is doing its job. Although it is activated, it doesn’t show up as an option under my manage tab as SpamKarma 2 does.
I am using WP 1.5.2, BTW, and it’s very solid and stable – no problems.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamThank you Charle97 and samboll.
I unzipped and installed the bad behavior folder on my server, in the plugins folder, and noticed that after I did, that I neglected to edit the bad behavior/bad-behavior-wordpress.php file as described here:The plug-in showed up in my plugin panel and was successfully activated. Do I need to go back and edit that php file and reinstall? Will the plugin work if I don’t? I really don’t want to do anything that’s going to mess up my wp installation.
Your suggestions are very appreciated. Thanks again.

In reply to: Editing htaccess file to deny comment spamDavid, thanks for the tip. I have installed SpamKarma. I’m unclear whether it will prevent the bots from hitting my site. The built in WP software was catching most of the comment spam via moderation – but I couldn’t stop the spammers from greatly increasing useless traffic to my site. Will SpamKarma do that? I’ve read through the documentation and I’m not sure it will make it invisible to bots -that’s my goal.

In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingI had been looking at the posts in Safari, so I went over to Firefox and the strange boxes showed up in the entry, so I was able to delete them. Now the feed (including both of the fixed entries) validates! Thanks so much for your patience. I sure wish I know how they got there in the first place. Isn’t it funny that the feed works even with these glitches in it for most people, but NOT for LJ. Case solved!
KarenForum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingI don’t see that – but it sounds like it might be the problem. How can I reveal it so I can delete it?
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingOK I published the two bad posts back into the feed. Here is the code for my posting (after dashed line)
——————

I’ll be the first to admit that this is not an entirely new response to the challenge. It’s a reworking of an impressionistic painting I did of my old college mug earlier this year (see below). What I chose to do was to take a second look at the composition and to see if I could improve upon it, or at the very least, to try something different with it and not make it worse.First, I cropped it so it wasn’t just floating in space. To create more drama I darkened the background overall using complementary hues and contrasting values. I changed the table surface to a curve instead of a flat surface to repeat the curves of the object, and I reserved a little bit of white around the top of the mug to suggest a shininess and a glow. I also added some transparent warmer color to the curved cylinder of the mug to tie it together with the warmer setting and created more of a form shadow on the curve. I can see at least a dozen other things I could do to fix it, but that time would probably be better spent starting from scratch on something new, which I intend to do. It was originally painted in Corel Painter, but the revisions were done in Photoshop.
Oh, and in spite of yesterday’s ignominious defeat … go Bruins. We love you anyway.

And the following is the code from the other problem post, the one with the drawing of the old man:
——-start
<img src=”http://www.karenwinters.com/blogimages/elderly-dip-pen.jpg” width=350/>
With all the talk of dip pens recently, I decided to try my hand at something with an old world feeling. It’s not a copy of any drawing in particular, just an experiment “in the style of …” using a photo from a vintage book. Walnut ink and white ink on a blue-ish paper background.
I’m trying to change my way of thinking about drawings as being successful or not. Sometimes I play it safe with something I know how to do and although I may like the outcome, I haven’t really learned much. On other occasions, like this one, the outcome may not be as satisfactory but I feel like I’ve learned a lot in the process, so I’d consider it a success. It’s all in how you look at it … goal or process.
Today, I vote for process.
————————— end entryThat’s all there is in the entry boxes of each. I’d kind of hate to lose those posts because i got some really nice feedback on them. I hope there’s some way to save them without making the feed invalid for LJ.
Thanks again, K.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingI do have links to pictures on my FTP site, which I always do since I am using it as an art blog. And I always code them exactly the same way, using a shrunk down version of the jpeg in the blog, clickable to expand to the full sized picture. I just use img src tags, nothing fancy. I will check and see if I detect anything amiss. If someone put a badly formed link in a comment would that cause a problem?

In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingOK, I put the problematic post onto draft, and ran it through the validator … and it identified the subsequent post as problematic also. So I put that one on draft as well and now it validates. Is there any way that I can examine those two old posts to find out what was wrong about them (something with CDATA huh?) so that I can avoid this issue in the future? Miklb and Firas I am very grateful for your suggestions in this troubleshooting process.

In reply to: Live Journal RSS Feed stopped workingAh, so turning it back into a draft sort of puts it on “hold” but doesn’t delete it? I’ll try that and see what happens, thanks.
