if it helps anyone:
I had autoupdate on the wordpress kit set up across multiple accounts / sites all on the one server. mysql service failed and went into a restart loop, it also (I think) changed its own config /etc/my.cnf to try and resolve itself.
Anyway nothing would connect to mysql db, so a lot of things didn’t work.
1/ Pointed the DNS servers away so that the auto-update would not start, and so that user / admin actions would not trigger the issue
2/ Restored from recent backup.
3/ Stopped the Woocommerce update from 6.6.1 to 6.7.0 from taking place via disabling the automatic update (in both WordPress Kit and on the site)
4/ pointed the DNS back to the right place.
kinda happy now but no idea what actually went wrong yet
