Found the answer while doing more work on it yesterday. The featured image is used as part of the rotator, but must not be bigger than the space provided, or it will be “too large”. By that I mean, if your featured image is cropped in the preview of it in your post, it’s too big to be scaled in the rotator. I haven’t tested this theory completely myself, but having changed the size of the featured image so that it fits into the space provided without being cropped, the rotator works fine for the theme I have it set on. I should also clarify that the manager recognizes these posts, but does not show the featured image and thus are defaulted to white boxes when viewing the rotator in the page.
