Perhaps you can point me to the second part of the question as well, how do I then move the other posts to an archive page that somehow organizes the posts?
I read an article about this but that was targeted to pre 1.5 sites. For post 1.5 sites, it tells to use the sidebar but my current theme doesn’t seem to use the new sidebar issues.

Hmmm, I am not an expert at all but I did it the other way around; I first created the pictures directory on the server (using FTP), then uploaded the images there by ftp, then I told WordPress where to find the image.
It worked without a problem.
To me it seems like your not able to create a directory or to write in it with your current settings,
