I never got a response from this forum… obviously. But I did find my answer on this video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zbw-N-2vpw. It will walk you right through the process.
Also, my main issue was that my theme had a header and that is what I needed to change not just the background color.

The actual background is the white and the black is placed someone else in the code.
