I’m having the same problem; also have 1.8 installed. Buttons set to “x to close”.

In my case there was a conflict with a theme I was using; once that was updated as well, WP-Tiles worked again as expected.
I have a similar issue. Site was updated to 4.5 automatically and now Tiles are not performing as expected. The grid sizing is equal throughout and images are not fully filling tiles.
