How may I shut off the display of the name (and day/time) associated with a blog post?

I’m having a similar problem–but it’s not my header, it’s the top image. I’ve inserted itno the Home page as the page background image as a “cover” I’d like it to spread horizontally across the screen, but it only covers about 60% of the screen with 20% margins on each side.
If I make it my background image as under the Appearance->General->background image, it spreads it across the page, but I can’t put text into the image.
suggestions?
