I deactivated all my plug-ins except for Akismet, because when I turned it off I immediately started getting overwhelmed with SPAM. And then after a day my website crashed again (the htaccess file disappeared). Is it possible that the Akismet plug-in is corrupted? And if so, what is a good alternative?

When I discussed this issue with my hosting provider, they said they thought it was a WordPress issue.
