Is it at all possible to filter out subcategories when you’re on a Parent Category page?

If I’m on a category page on my website, it automatically checks off that parent category and by clicking on a subcategory nothing is going to happen?? Then what is this filter actually filtering? How can I filter when I’m on a category page?

When you’re under a category, Key Machines for example, and you then check off one of the subcategories, why would all of the other subcategories remain and not filter out? This is what I need to happen, how can this be accomplished?

Even when a subcategory is checked the filter is not filtering correctly.
