This is now resolved.
It turns out there was a non-ascii character which looked just like the minus symbol – that was confusing csv and ignoring entries which contained it.

One more thing, I noticed that several items (paintings) are not created when importing a .csv file.

Could this have to do with the length or formatting of the description string?

Below an example of an item which fails to be imported. It says that it is imported succesfully but it doesn’t show. Removing the description solves the issue.
