I have run into the same problem with the failed update message. I have read many posts that talk about deleting the .maintenance file. I also read a post that mentioned that this is a hidden file. Even after ensuring I could view hidden files, there was no .maintenance file to delete. I also saw in another forum that you should delete the “upgrade” folder that resides under wp_content. I did that also…same problem.
