When a plugin really dies it is easy to work out – you just turn them all off then turn then back on one at a time and load the blog after each one but this problem is trickier because after it crashes and gets revived it works again for a few hours or even a day or two then it dies again… much harder for me to test.
The amount of comments wasn’t huge though – maybe in the space of 10 minutes 15-20 comments got left. Would that be enough to throw off a smaller server?
I am not sure about the plan. It is a friend hosting it for us on a server he has access to.
Twice it has crashed as I have been using the site so I was able to contact our host immediately, both times I have suggested the comment load and he did check but said absolutely nothing was in the logs.
The only thing we’ve noticed with the last 3 times it has crashed is that 6-8 people were actively commenting all at once. A lot of debate rages on our site, we can get threads with hundreds of comments, but normally it is spaced a bit, someone leaves a comment then 10-15 mins later someone leaves a response and so on… at the time of the crash we were noticing much more rapdid commenting, you’d reload the page and 5 new comments would be there, reload again and another few would be there – two of the times it crashed the comment frequency was up, more than normal – but surely it should be able to cope with rapid succession commenting – how do bigger sites cope?

In reply to: Categories all lead to 404 PageEvery single category returns a 404.
We have a lot of posts and they pretty much all have categories so the categories should be bringing up results when clicked on.

In reply to: Categories all lead to 404 PageWhat do you mean by that?
We removed the permalink structure we’d added (which we needed to mimic as close as possible our previous Blogger structure). But when we tested it it made no difference to the category problem, they still returned 404 errors but now we also got 404’s happening on all the pages people were coming in on external links on so we put it back.
