I actually found out the functionality was already in there.
I didn’t see you could have a field on “any”. This narrowed down the number of variations I had to create drastically.

For future reference of other ppl who are searching for this:

Don’t generate all options/variations of attributes under variations, but only add one or maybe one for each colour if you like. The other fields from which you don’t want to create variations on can be set to “any” when you manually add a variation. This way you can still switch out the image if the colour of an item is chosen, but leave out all the different sizes/colour combinations so you don’t have to create every combination and price it accordingly.

No plugin is needed unless you need to price each attribute combination/variation differently
