Thank-you sacredpath that was very helpful. I had completely overlooked the image size. Where I have saved the image at the correct size for a featured image it seems to be working better.
Posts direct to facebook or twitter are picking up the correct featured image.
Posts to facebook via twitter are picking up the site logo – but this is better than a picture of me every time!

Many thanksI thought I had managed to resolve this by activating Publicize for Facebook in Jetpack (I had not done this before because all my posts to Twitter are set to post to my Facebook page already) but it’s still not fully resolved. I can now copy a link to my Facebook page & it is using the correct featured image for pages that do not have the sidebar (full width templates). So a partial result but I would still like to know if there is anything I can do to make it work for pages with the sidebar & ideally for the post shared via Twitter too. If anyone has any suggestions?
PS. The correct featured image shows on Twitter for the same links.
