Just in case anyone else comes across this and has read this far. I have a solution.
Boonebgorges the plugin author has created a beta plugin which puts docs back inside groups. You can find the link on github here:

I just watched this video:
And on that video (2:26) when it shows viewing/editing a document the groups header is still visible 😮
