Why would I want to unsubscribe to the forum that I am interested in? That is not what I want to do at all. I just want to stop being NOTIFIED BY EMAIL about every single thing that the forum I am subscribed to belches out.

The procedure I described in my original post should most certainly stop NOTIFICATIONS about the forum? Right. That’s common sense.

Legality or not, it’s just plain NOT NICE to make it so difficult to stop getting emails.

And that’s common sense, too. Now quoting the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. agency charged with commercial email enforcement (I’ve highlighted the relevant parts):

“Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you. Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future. Craft the notice in a way that’s easy for an ordinary person to recognize, read, and understand. Creative use of type size, color, and location can improve clarity. Give a return email address or another easy Internet-based way to allow people to communicate their choice to you. You may create a menu to allow a recipient to opt out of certain types of messages, but you must include the option to stop all commercial messages from you. Make sure your spam filter doesn’t block these opt-out requests.”

Again, that’s nice and it’s the law. Of COURSE I am not “threatening legal action”.

That’s the law and it applies to for profit and not for profit entities. I know, because I worked a not for profit entity for 30 years and WE had to comply, just like everyone else.

The emails I get from ww.wp.xz.cn say at the bottom [emphasis mine], “Login and visit the topic to unsubscribe from these emails.”

Right, visit the TOPIC, not the FORUM. I want to get email notifications on the TOPIC that I have raised, not get swamped with every single solitary email the forum belches out. For instance, at the bottom of this topic thread that I am typing this reply it says “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”. Yes, I want THAT not every single thing that spews out of an entire forum.

Folks, this is common sense stuff. I trust the ww.wp.xz.cn people take this heart and make the necessary changes.
