I guessed there was 2 estimated reason:
1) browser (less chanse)
2) global setting of the operating system

I had the same problem and found this topic and tried to solve it. I changed my browser: Opera->Mozilla->Chrome and this didn’t help.
Then I went to the “Control panel->System Properties->Perfomance Options” of my OS (WinXP) and switched on “Smooth edges of screen fonts”. And it solved the problem of distortion only in Opera.
The most awful distortion is in the Mozilla.

So, the reason has nothing to do with OS or browser.

PS: I installed a “clean” version without plugins and/or any customization.
