As a follow up, I did find a work-around.

I used CategoryTinymce – a plugin that turns the Category Description window into a WYSIWYG window which accepts shortcodes. You can then just display posts based on whatever category. Works well with a little customization of category.php

Look forward to hearing if there is a more automated way of handling this with the plugin.
