The problem I have with your response, and many comments online, is that IMAP cannot send an email. The email client, be it Thunderbird or Outlook may well save a copy in the local context of that email client, which is not the context of the email hosting service.

The email is sent using SMTP, always. You state that the email client “then reflects this change, displaying the sent email in your local “Sent” folder, which is synchronized with the server”. You then say “IMAP creates a copy of your sent emails on the server, and your client reflects this copy locally. I am sorry but IMAP does nothing, the email client may do something, and it is that something I am trying to discover. By the way, whatever Thunderbird does, Outlook does not do.

I am sorry but I find your response to be factually incorrect and more than a little confusing.

Thunderbird saves a copy of the sent email in the Sent folder in the local repository, if the Thunderbird settings are defined to do this, as is also the case for Outlook. What happens next is that somehow Thunderbird will cause a copy of the sent email to be transferred to the email hosting service repository of the relevant account, eventually ending up in the Sent folder of that repository. Outlook does not do this.

I am trying to learn how Thunderbird does this. If you don’t know, I prefer that you say so.

In conclusion WP Mail does not give me what I am looking for.

Many thanks Gavin, your advice hit the nail on the head. The need to have a value for the keyword order and that the value must be in upper case is less than obvious. So I now have what I need. It is a pity that the developer has not responded, but hopefully the documentation could be updated to clarify the behaviour that Gavin has observed. My problem has been resolved.

Never received any response so I changed direction. I have chosen to use a plugin named Counts per Day. This works although it has it’s own ‘quirks’.
