It’s better after clearing cache, the pics are smaller, but they are not cropped, and the thumbs are still too big.
But I’ve solved this problem by combining it with the plugin “WP User Avatar”.
The only solution I discovered so far is that when you want the order of authors to stay the way you want it, you have to change it in quick edit (in full edit it comes back to default order, so remember to always change it in quick edit).

Hi, I’m having the exactly same issue. It started to behave like this since the new WP version (4.7) came out.
