I worked on one of my sites yesterday but just checked again this morning (11th Nov) and it is still not updating on others.
If I remove and reinstall – as is being suggested – will I lose the most current backups? The “Uninstall-reinstall” option is OK if you only have one site.
However, if you are looking after a number of sites it is very time consuming.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: WordPress core file modified: index.phpHi Edzie,
I am having a similar error.
However in mine there is a big chunk (23 lines – some very long) of code.
i.e. “<?php ini_set(‘display_errors’, ‘Off’); error_reporting(0); $yses75 = $_SERVER[‘HTTP_REFERER’]” and
“if(!$_COOKIE[’29vlmy’] && $oovcsg !== false && $ubezlh5 === true)”Tried to “Repair” but it says that “We could not write to that file. You may not have permission to modify files on your WordPress server.”
As I am the owner and sole user I find that very strange.
I will be following it up with my Hosting provider.EDIT : UK2 – my hosting – changed my file permission that shows in the error from 0444 to 0644. I apparently can’t do that for myself so am very glad that they are always there 24/7/365 to help.

In reply to: 5.6 update critical errorI have resolved this.
I used the cPanel WordPress Management and it worked just fine.
I still do not know why the Update from within WordPress fails, but as long as there is an easy update path – i.e. not including doing FTP, etc. – then that’s a win.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: 5.6 update critical errorHi there,
I am having this too – on every site I try to update.
It has been happening at least since 5.6 and I had to go the FTP route – or remove the old WP and re-load.
First it says that it cannot verify the zip and then it just stalls at Unpacking.
It is obvious that there is something inherently wrong with the update process.
If it is due to there “not being enough space” on the server, either it is overloading the site with “new stuff” before removing “old stuff” or has some other problem. There is enough space if I load a new fresh install.
Please, I know that this is a free to use, open source, but isn’t there someone who can fix it, please again.
By the way, tried to use the WordPress Manager in my cPanel and it just says – The following errors were found :
The installation files are missing hence cannot proceed with the upgrade
OK, moved onto another one, which was a later WP version and it went through as expected and is now 5.7. So it might be that jumping up from an older version was the problem?
Best regards,

In reply to: update wordpress 5.5 failedThis is getting to be quite a pain.
Every one of my sites says I have to update but they all get the :
“The authenticity of wordpress-5.5.1-no-content.zip could not be verified as no signature was found.”
As suggested I tried an immediate retry but had this again, just faster to get there.
Something is obviously very much amiss with this update and, if I may be so bold, may I suggest that the ubiquitous “Someone” has a look at what is going wrong.
Either this is an important update and it should work “right out of the tin” or it does not mater that we can’t update to it. Either way is OK but, please, let us know one way or the other.
Many thanks,
Mike
