Thanks so much — that was driving me crazy!!!
I just continued troubleshooting by disabling different plug-ins.
When I deactivated the ‘FileBird – WordPress Media Library Folders‘ plugin the live preview began working again and I am now able to customize.
FYI for future reference and I hope saves someone else a few hours of time in the future…
