If anyone else is having this problem, look a few topics down. Damian provides a solution. It’s called Mailchimp for WP Issue. And it works!
I have disabled AJAX if that makes a difference.
I found this great tutorial on underscores. Videos 3 and 4 were the most helpful to me, but the whole series is worth a watch, depending on your own knowledge of WP.
