If I have a category hierarchy that looks like this:

Parent Category
— Subcategory

and a product that is only in Subcategory, then Parent category page will not display the Subcategory.

If I place the product in both Parent Category and Subcategory, then the Parent category page will display the subcategory. That might be a temporary workaround for you. A side effect is that if the Parent category is set to show both subcategories and products, the product will be displayed there also.

I am running into the same issue on 3.3.1. Previously, categories that held only subcategories displayed a list of those subcategories. Now, categories that hold only subcategories don’t display any subcategories.
