@warrencat you can download it right from here. Just go to the main plugin page and click on Advanced View, then you will be able to download previous versions of the plugin. I downloaded 1.6.2 and all is good now.

No caching plugin in the site, but the VPS does have Varnish installed and running. Do I need to add anything in the rules for it?

My hoster helped me figure out the issue. It was the https plugin wrecking havoc with the links everywhere. They disabled it and all problems were gone.
