THANK YOU SO MUCH! I swear I had googled everything as I knew there was a solution out there. Option 1 worked for me so far (uncheck Updated Designs) but understanding what was happening and the other approaches to fixing it was amazingly helpful.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I did get the same error only processing the uploads – definitely something wonky there. But I was able to restore all of the other files – database, plugins, etc. and then as I noted, I uploaded the 20K images via FTP.
It actually worked fine and populated the media library perfectly without a plugin once I realized I had actually spent 6 hours loading the files to the wrong WordPress directory – I put them in the live site not the staging subdirectory site. So a self-inflicted wound. Luckily, I could use the control panel to copy the files from the live site Uploads to the staging site Uploads which was pretty much immediate and we are good to go.
I am a little worried about what happened with the uploads not working on restore, but I will chalk it up to a fluke as your plugin has saved me numerous times with no issues. I think I’ll just plan on restoring the non-upload files if needed since I have so many images, but I think I am at a stable place on site build and may not break anything now.
Ok to close this now as I am set and hopefully if someone else has this issue, they won’t have 20k images and will load their images in the correct directory. Thanks again for your help.
