thanks for the fast reply! I tried your steps to trouble-shoot and I think I could discover the source of the problem. I enabled everything step by step and once I enabled the plugin “Smush” which reduces the image sizes, the problem would occour. So I changed back to the production site, removed the plugin, resized alle images manually and everything seems to work fine now.

Thank you so much for your help, I didn’t even know about this strategy of debugging. 🙂
