Thank you so much. Took me a while to give some feedback on your suggestions.
So I did what you suggested…and the only plugin when disabled that got rid of the grey shapes was WooCommerce, which did not make a lot sense to me.

At one point, I thought an active WordPress Slider Soliloquy Lite plugin was the problem but another page without the slider still showed the grey shapes.

Finally, I figured perhaps it was something with the way I am formatting the pictures for the product category page.

I edited the code on the product category page under the Text tab:

[product_category category="necklaces" per_page="12" columns="4" orderby="price" order="asc"]

deleted the instances “code” in brackets, it appears these were the culprits.

I guess if I was a coder I would have known better.
