Hello Randy. Many thanks for all your advice. I have tried installing those plugins and followed the instructions, but unfortunately it hasn’t brought the images back.
What do you recommend regarding the wide featured images that used the appear at the top of each post? I have just added a featured image for this post:

But it doesn’t appear. There are about 5 alternating featured images which should be at the top of the home page, contents page etc, but in the old website, each post had it’s own featured image. Although I have just added a new featured image for the post above, just the 5 alternating images show at the top.
