Update:
I changed the theme several times to recent themes, and it made no difference to the order of my entries.
However, I talked to one of my readers and he says that, for him, the entries are showing in the proper order, just as usual. I have no idea what this means. Anyone?
I did do an automatic upgrade that included a database backup before I upgraded. (I’m just not sure how to use it.)
I’ve had the Greening theme for a long time, so I’m not completely sure; I thought I got it when I downloaded WordPress, but now I’m not positive of where it came from. I did try previewing some other themes, with no change in these strange changes.
