Found it. The conflict was with the plugin really-simple-ssl. Deactivating that restored all my images.

Thanks. I have made some recent changes to .htaccess (setting up SSL) but I’ve tried commenting out the new lines, and that had no effect.
Currently working on getting a backup sorted (like I should have done months ago) so I can try that conflict test. I’ll report back.
