Okay I’ve figured this out.
The step I was missing was the redirect login plugin.
So if someone is wanting to know what I did I accomplished this by using three plugins (there might be a better way but for now this works for me)
1. Use Role Scoper to set up users
2. Use Front End Editor
3. Use Peters Login Redirect so that the user is immediately taken to his or her post bypassing the dashboard all together
You can choose to turn off the top admin bar so that they have no access to the dashboard. But you might want a log out button.
