In reply to: [Booking for Appointments and Events Calendar - Amelia] Server Load?OK, so … as you’re running on a “dedicated cloud server” (hmmm … there’s really no such thing …), I’ll just translate that as “you are using more server power than most people do”. Appreciate the specificity!
But the rest of your answer kind of contradicts itself. I REALIZE you’ve created your own set of tables and pointed that out in my original question. I applaud this, as well; if ever your plug-in is uninstalled getting rid of it would be simple. BUT: what I was trying to understand is just what kind of a server hit having that structure imposes, and also what kind of hit YOUR very large metatable will result in … and when?

In reply to: [Booking for Appointments and Events Calendar - Amelia] Server Load?clever demo, vis a vis that answer. would you at least tell me what’s running on that server and how much server it is?
Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: WSOD on ANY theme changeHey Jan.
There was no 500 error per se, although I supposes WSOD IS one, right?
The fix turned out to be … get ready for this one … that a required plug-in which accompanies the theme (and which had been installed, internal to WP by following the instructions that popped up) wasn’t the correct version of the plugin.
So the good news is that once the developer ‘fessed up and provided the correct version of the plug-in, this was automagically resolved. The bad news, of course, is that it leaves me speculating about how such an error could have snuck by in the first place. That said, Ultra is a new theme and it’s entirely possible I was the very first person to flip it OFF.
Frustrating, though.
My apologies for not remembering to come back in here and updating the case. PRESUMABLY whatever was wrong (other than the postmeta thing above, which I maintain is a very bad idea) is now OK.
Thanks!

In reply to: WordPress and cookies policy.Questions like this have been asked here before and there seems not to be an answer that is acceptable; WordPress drops cookies; no cookies, no WordPress.
I’m not familiar with the specifics of the EU law, but I can’t imagine that you won’t be able to find a way to comply by NOTIFYING users that you are using cookies. There’s a plugin here that might do the trick: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/cookie-law-info

In reply to: [Seriously Simple Podcasting] Bad mp3 concatenationHugh, I get that “it’s working as long as … ” qualifies as “issue resolved”. AND: new posts are picking up none of that silliness; I need to fill them in to make them work (which isn’t as god as magic, but I can’t argue with right?).
My concern is that something in your software scanned the posts, SAW .mp3 files, and attempted to fill data in but got it wrong. And while that’s an intellectual puzzle that you might not be interested in solving the issue is “it goofed this up once, what’s to stop it from goofing something else up?”
Also (to my original question, actually), since there is something in there that filled in the boxes but the concatenation was comprised of at least one string that simply doesn’t exist (I’ve pored over the database and especially the postmeta table), Shouldn’t we both care ?
Just sayin’ …

In reply to: Insert/edit link Missing Title Field?Jan, I respect your point. I do. As I wrote complimentary things about your last response, I’m a little confused as to why you want to challenge me to do … otherwise?
I’d like to point out that the thing you’re talking about, while a valid concern on your side (albeit one we disagree on in terms of the metaphorical “letter of the law”), isn’t the issue. I’m not looking to create traffic; I’m looking to be helpful, useful, and productive as a member of the community, and I can’t do that by telling half a story. You know that’s true.
So really the only thing I can translate all of that into is “play by our rules or go away altogether” (the rules being the issue behind the argument that started in December on Twitter; I think I could link to that w/o breaking the rules but I’ll restrain myself).
Under those constraints, sir, “warning me” isn’t really meaningful; you’ve already tied my hands by making me able to talk but not communicate, even when I’m trying to be helpful (I presume you’ll accept that I might actually mean that last part).
I’d hope you’d rather have a more productive exchange than that. If not, that’s on you. You do what you feel you need to; I’ll do the same.

In reply to: Restoring TITLE Tag functionalityvery well put “agree to disagree”, Rich.
And yes, of course I could roll back, and I actually happen to be one of those people who knows how and isn’t afraid to.
I also concur : re the “hundreds of very smart volunteers” thing.
But with all of that said: as a person who “gets it”, I don’t want an outdated version of software that works by virtue of its connecetdness to the cold, cruel outside world; that’s a security hazard, by definition (not to mention I don’t want to have to look at the update notice, right?).
And it still, for me, anyway, comes back to the fact that this is a change, a REAL, functional change. And it got slipstreamed instead of announced. And that’s not OK.
Thanks, Rich.

In reply to: Restoring TITLE Tag functionalityRich, I want my site to be as inclusive … AS I WANT IT TO BE, not as inclusive as WP decides it should be, and doesn’t disclose the change.
Not OK. Not OK, Not OK.

In reply to: Insert/edit link Missing Title Field?I’ve dug around enough to find “The WordPress Philosophy” at https://ww.wp.xz.cn/about/philosophy/
The philosophy statement is fine, to a point; “we do things for the majority”. I’ll seriously not try to interpret what majority means in this case because there are multiple ways to address that idea.
I’ve read a comment that the SEO angle is immaterial, since Title tags for SEO are deprecated [ redacted ]. I disagree with that, but I can accept it, too.
But Otto’s explanation at https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/insertedit-link-missing-title-field?replies=16#post-6869047, while an explanation, isn’t a good one. Why? Because it’s MY site, so I get to decide whether I think pop-ups are useful.
Are they of less value or confusing value to the visually impaired? Sure. Are they of questionable-if-in-no-way-harmful use on (some) mobile devices? I suppose. But it’s still my site.
I know how to insert the title tags automatically. And WP has the right to go in any direction they want … and that’s why plug-ins exist. The real issue is that this is a genuine change to the way things work in WordPress, and they didn’t bother to mention they’d made it. Wow … that slightly-tweaked color palette sure was important!
Seriously … just stupid.

In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] pingbacks broke …Jan, I kid you not when I say I appreciate you chiming in. Yes, we understand each other.
And I’m sure you realize the redirect is not a trick of any sort; it’s just how things “are” are the moment. AND: (I’m serious) often the redirect never happens; we see people go the the wordpress-dot link and stick there … except when they don’t.
Thanks; this was re-sent through the support form; Hopefully it finds its way to Jeremy ?

In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] pingbacks broke …Hmmm.
I use Wordfence for security, and also run a couple of user filtering plugins, but there genuinely doesn’t seem to be anything in any of them that should be blocking xml/rpc.
(and yes, of course trackbacks are “enabled” … I did check for you, though) 😉
Your security question is well taken, though: now once again … all worked until this version of Jetpack, so … I don’t think that’s it UNLESS there’s something in Wordfence that is naturally at odds with the latest JP update. Any broad thoughts on that or the need for “extra” security, to begin with?
BTW: the caching add-on in Wordfence is spectacular, AND compatible with everything else I have running, so if possible I’d like to keep using it!
And again, I can replicate/fix/break by disabling/re-enabling Jetpack …every time. I’m just … stuck!
