Forum: Localhost Installs
In reply to: 2nd local WP instance not recognizedThanks @tellyworth, but it’s still no go.
My htaccess file either doesn’t work or isn’t being read at all, with or without altered paths.
I am not using multisite because I will eventually delete and replace an online site with a locally developed one, and I need my first local WP site as the archive of the online site to be deleted.
Local Environment reads like a lot more fiddling than I’m already doing.
The error 404 file, from my first local wp installation, tells me the second virtual host is simply not being recognized. I want to keep going with tracking why that might be the case. Any suggestions along those lines?

Thank you sir! Switch to Helvetica Neue did indeed fix the problem. How would you cull web font contenders that convert to woff OK? What gives a font away as not suitable for web use before you use it online?
Thanks again, for your help. I had no idea that changing my sans-serif could involve this level of pre-vetting.

In reply to: Italics fail in headline fieldThanks for your quick response. I will get to this as soon as i have a few minutes to fiddle.
Font property, eh? I wouldn’t have thought of that in a million years.
The Helvetica I used didn’t show up as a registered font, and converted to web font quite readily, which is served from my site.

Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Botnet Attack Blocker] Error locks me outBig thumbs up.
It was late in my antipodean night when I threw up my arms and cried ‘I’m locked out of my blog. What shall I do now? I’m doomed!’
Instead of looking at the error message, which told me where the error was, I ran around like a headless chook, traipsing eventually to the forum, and tapped out my sad little message.
After having done it though, some rationality returned and I did exactly what you suggested some hours later: I located the php page referenced in the error message (duuuuuh!) and renamed it, forcing the plugin to deactivate, and allowing me to remove it.
My only active plugins include Antispam Bee and Google XML Sitemaps.
After reading your last post I installed the new version of Botnet Attack Blocker, logged out, and back into my admin pages. I did some stuff successfully, and then logged out and in again. All appears to be well.
So, whatever you changed seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your response.

Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: Making menus visible in blank themeThank you kindly sir/madam. I had looked at this page but probably inserted code from mixed with other snippets found elsewhere to create fubar. After your advice I concentrated on following these instructions precisely.
The result was bloody marvellous, with one exception: no dynamic sidebar. For that I had to look at c.bavota’s page: http://bavotasan.com/2009/how-to-widgetize-your-wordpress-sidebar/.
With both sets of instructions followed, I can now claim to have been incomprehensibly stupid enough to have started out with WordPress by designed my own template from scratch – with a lot of help from my friends – and survived to tell about it!
My hat is tipped in your direction, WPyogi
