In reply to: Download failed. Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)Hi Jonathan,
I gotta say I’m a bit bewildered by Host Gator’s approach here. You say you’ve found one instance where disabling plugins resolved the issue, and yet here in this thread (and many other places as well) there’s numerous instances of it being fixed by a much simpler work-around that has nothing to do with plugins. The problem has been shown to be a Host Gator problem (I am still yet to see it with any other host), the exact fix for said problem has been served on a silver platter to you, and still the strategy you seem to be taking (as did all reps I talked to previously) is to point the finger wherever else you can outside of Host Gator. Why would anyone go through the steps you’ve outlined here when the initial workaround I provided is far simpler and doesn’t require finding out one of the plugins you need won’t work?
I apologize if this seems hostile, but please instead take it as a disgruntled customer as trying to encourage a better support strategy. I personally would have rathered Host Gator tell me they don’t support certain WordPress configurations on shared servers than continually try to tell me the problem is my plugins, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. If I was told it just wasn’t supported, though I’d be miffed I’d likely consider Host Gator for future hosting needs. But as it is now I’m certain if I have a problem customer support will do what they can to alleviate blame rather than find a solution that works for me, hence I won’t be returning for any reason unless all other hosts vanish off the face of the earth.
And I understand the troubleshooting steps. It’s not unreasonable to suggest disabling and re-enabling plugins as that often does present conflicts within the WordPress ecosystem. But when you have someone who’s already done the research work for you, who presents the problem in detail and even shows you how it’s fixed, you need to give us something more than “it’s a plugin problem.”

In reply to: Download failed. Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)Glad it helped someone else! Yeah it’s really kind of amazing that Host Gator can keep getting approached with the same problem and keep deflecting over and over…
Oh well, I was helping out for someone else who I advised to move away from them. Seems this problem is mostly exclusive of them (at least I’ve never seen it mentioned to happen with any other host).

In reply to: Download failed. Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)I went ahead and just used the workaround I mentioned in the first post and I can now install and update plugins again. I came across numerous other instances of this issue when researching, and every single time it was either self-hosted or a problem with Host Gator. And every single time, HostGator support essentially spent their efforts trying to show it wasn’t an issue with their servers, even though the proposed fix was incredibly simple (restarting apache or updating cURL on the server). My experience was similar. So, if you’re reading this and with HostGator, my suggestion would be to use the workaround and move to a new hosting provider as soon as you are able.

In reply to: Download failed. Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)Let me try another way. Is there any major concern with installing a plugin manually via just downloading the files and loading into WordPress?

In reply to: [Theme: Parallax Pro] Change image size in child themeShould anyone come across something similar in the future, it turns out I did everything correctly as I outlined above just needed to refresh the thumbnails (which I should have realized) by resetting them (or using a plugin). Once they were refreshed they displayed correctly.

In reply to: Download failed. Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)No the site isn’t using ssl. From all the research I’ve done just googling the error it’s a host gator server issue every time.

In reply to: [Theme: Parallax Pro] Change image size in child themeIs this perhaps the wrong forum?

In reply to: [Theme: Parallax Pro] Change image size in child themeI should clarify the images I’m wanting to change are under the Eat and Cook sections, which are set up as Blog sections in Parallax Pro’s parallax home page settings. The images are currently getting resized to ‘medium-thumbnail’ size, but I’d like to get them to the new ‘blog-thumbnail’ size (which is the images’ native size).

In reply to: [Caldera Forms - More Than Contact Forms] Entry values not being registeredYeah you’re probably right. If it’s already a known issue and not as crippling as it initially seemed probably best to close it for now. Thanks for your help!

In reply to: [Caldera Forms - More Than Contact Forms] Entry values not being registeredAh great thanks! It wasn’t working the email before, but indeed it does appear to be now, not sure what was going on before.
