Thank you Clayton James for the help. I had left too much code on the page.
How I did it.
After doing a fresh download I renamed the header file header1.php and ftp’d it to my public_html/wp-content/themes/default. I then logged in to the editor on wp appearance themes. I copied both the header and the header code to a notepad and printed it out for comparison. I found I had left some of the previous pasted code there and it affected the margins.
